Some resources are valuable for what they are. Others are valuable for everything they make possible. Rare earths belong to the second category. Behind many of the technologies reshaping the global economy —electric motors, wind turbines, robotics, sensors, advanced electronics, aerospace and defence systems— lies a dependence on just 17 elements. China accounts for around 69% of global mine production and roughly 91% of refining for magnets. Argentina has a real but little-explored geological base: some 190,395 tonnes of identified resources and an estimated additional potential of 3.3 million tonnes yet to be discovered —resources, not proven reserves. The report analyses the geopolitics of rare earths, their value chain and Argentina's potential.
